Abstract

The literature survey reveals that the genus Barleria offers a considerable scope for the study of bioactive constituents. The methanol extract of Barleria prionitis Linn. Showed significant anti-infl ammatory activity comparable to control and standard indomethacin.

Abstract

Herbal drugs are already in vouge as therapeutic agents for thousands of years but in present times there is a need to re-valuate their clinical efficacy. Some times different herbs are known by same name; also a large number of plants are collected from wild sources like forests and waste places through unskilled labour for which it is not always possible to differentiate the plant species taxonomically. Thus, the identity and quality of the drug is compromised. Aerva lanta (A.l.) is a glaring example, which is adulterated by Aerva tomentosa (A.t.) having same family amaranthaceae. Aerva lanata commonly known as Bui-Kallan (Pb.) have nearly same synonym, as that of Aerva tomentosa, Boikallan (Pb.).Both are used in the traditional system of medicine as diuretic. Till yet no comparison has been made for their diuretic activity. Hence, we compared the diuretic effect of ethanolic extract of aerial parts of Aerva lanata and Aerva tomentosa.

Abstract

The satellite and ground based spectral data corresponding to the six reflected radiance bands of Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) are analysed to determine their utility in mapping the possible lithologic variations wihtin the Siwalik sediments of J&K foothills. The satellite reflectance values plotted along a selected image profile identified subunits within the Lower Siwalik, Pammdal and Nagrota, which were not identified by conventional field mapping. The field reflectance studies also confirmed their presence. The variation may reflect a possible lithofacies change wihtin the units. The technique developed may provide a rapid reconnaissance tool for preparing lithofacies map.

Abstract

Aerva tomentosa Forsk. is recognized by its white axillary bunches of small woolly flowers and traditionaly claimed for its wound healing activity. Wound healing activity of ethanolic extract of Aerva tomentosa Forsk. was evaluated on excision and incision wound using Wistar rats of either sex. Percentage of wound contraction was measured in excision wound, whereas tensile strength of healed wound was measured in incision wound. In excision wound, wound contraction was 93.8 % on 16^th day for Aerva tomentosa treated groups. In incision model, significant increase in tensile strength of healed wound was observed in the concentrated ethanolic extract.
